Finding My Niche

A few blogs earlier, I wrote to you guys about a desire to incorporate more beauty and fashion-style posts into my blog, as it's what I used to write about on previous blogs, and enjoyed. However, I've been contemplating this decision a bit and just wanted to make this distinction: my blog is never going to be all beauty and fashion based. I have lots of different interests, I could never confine myself to only writing about a couple! I guess I'm quite 'divergent' in that sense. My blog is something I want to create memories with... I don't want to get stuck writing posts purely for others' enjoyment.

I came across a post by Career Girl Daily entitled How To Make Money From Your Blog which sort of drilled something home to me. She writes, "Typically you won’t make money with a blog that specializes in a variety of subjects and has no focus," and, frankly, I'm scared she's right. She goes on to write about 'finding your niche' and I guess that's just it... I haven't found mine yet. I haven't found one subject that I would be happy confining myself to for, maybe, years. Although making money from my blog isn't something that's plausible in the place that I'm at right now, one day, I do hope that it will take off. Some bloggers are scared of putting their lives out there on the internet, but to be honest, I've always been quite an open person, and I think - as long as you keep it classy - there's no reason not to divulge. Obviously there are limits.

I've always loved to pour my heart and soul into writing, whether it ends up being in vain, for no reward, or not. Writing is just something I love to do. I wish, in this day and age, that was seen as a 'niche' in itself. However, blogging is now a semi-competitive activity, and it's hard to tell what there is a gap in the market for. I've realised that I haven't asked for much feedback from you guys, and that's my bad. Some of you have been kind enough to comment, or even mention me in your blogs, which I have been extremely grateful for. My friend Liv, otherwise known as Grace, wrote of me recently "Meaghan's blog is beautifully presented and always has fresh and intriguing content, whether it's about Game of Thrones or social issues. I'm guilty of constantly going onto her page to see if she has released any new posts, it's that addictive!" A massive thank you to Liv for that. Fresh and addictive are both things I would like my blog to be. I like to think that I inject a lot of my personality into my writing; I certainly tell you a lot of what's going on in my life, via my monthly updates.

At the moment I'm going through an especially difficult time, and I'm unsure whether to put pen to paper about it; or more accurately, finger to keyboard. In short, my mum, who suffers from Schizoaffective Disorder, has relapsed and is starting her recovery. It's not necessarily that I would feel uncomfortable writing the post, I just don't want it to be a negative experience for me, my mum, or anyone else reading it. I like to think that I would be able to document what's going on in a positive way, instead of it just turning into a criticism of the mental health system. Of course I would love to write the post and hopefully help other families, and especially teenagers, whose loved ones suffer from the condition or something similar. God knows there isn't much out there about it! However, as you'd imagine, it's such a sensitive thing to be completely public about. I've had second thoughts about it and come to the conclusion it is something I should probably vent out on a private forum that's for my eyes only.

However, this still left me with more confusion as to what belongs on my blog. I decided to start a poll: What would you like to see more of on To Blog Would Be An Awfully Big Adventure? mainly just to gauge how far my readers would like to see into my life/head. Would my readers prefer posts that are deep and meaningful and could help somebody, or would they prefer me to continue as I am, somewhat erratically, but doing what I fancy? Do they want more specialised posts that contribute to a theme? To find the answers to my queries, the poll will be open for a month, until midday on the 7th June. Readers of my blog can choose whether they'd like me to write more tags, beauty and fashion posts, reviews, personal posts, or opinions. You can tick multiple boxes and the poll can be found to the right of this post, underneath my Blog Archive.

Thanks guys, and I look forward to hearing your feedback!

  1. More important than all the advice out there is to stay true to yourself. I blog about food, fashion, music, etc because that's me. I am a lifestyle blogger & that's my life. Whatever your niche, be you & stay true. :]
